HAPPY 65th BIRTHDAY EDMUND JAMES

On 14th September 2007, some Sec 4 Science cohorts gathered to celebrate the 65th birthday of their form teacher, Edmund James. It was held @ Choon Seng Seafood @ Hougang Ave 1 Kopitiam. Almost every Montfortian knows that Choon Seng Seafood brings back good memories of the old Ponggol End chilly crabs. The Hougang unit is not the original Choon Seng, and minus the sea breeze and bus exhaust fumes.

The simple celebration was decorated with plenty of seafood, wine, beer, songs, cakes, presents, even a beer waitress and the ever-present kopitiam crowd! There was a hilarious and lively mini debate between the teacher and students on " The Fundamentals of Procreation". Luckily, it ended peacefully!

The evening went by all too quickly, and the celebration ended on a highly charged spirit with the birthday song and cutting of cakes by the ‘birdday boy? Even the beer waitress presented Edmund with a birthday gift!

Nobody went home empty handed. Koh Seow Long sponsored each guest with a box of Tung Lok mooncakes! A collection was held and amounted to S$867.00 for the St Gabriel's Foundation fund.

I thanked the Class of 1972 Sec 4 Science for organising the celebration of Edmund's 65th Birthday. I am very certain that he is very appreciative and will remember the occasion for many years!

Special thanks to James Cher Liew Hiong, Richard Mok Piak Liang, Law Kee Hau, Koh Seow Long, Tan Chee Meng, Peter Tan Poh Heng, Dennis Mok Kee Seng, Lawrence Ku Yun Fong, Victor Lim Kong Puay, Choy Kah Kin, Eric Ee, John Lee Boon Guan, Tng Hor Teck, William Kwa Hui Khoon, Roger Ng Tioy Teng, Shih Chi Lai & Seow Kok Hsien for making it happened.

We Remember Bro Andrew

A MONTFORTIAN GIANT

The school flag has been flown at half-mask for the last two days and there is a condolence book placed outside the general office for students to pen their thoughts and condolence. There was also a minute of silence observed by students and staff.

A photo exhibition has been set up, which features the life of Bro Andrew, and his contribution to Montfort. You should really read what the boys have written about Bro Andrew even though they have not met him. It was through the eulogy yesterday that they came to know him and what he stands for, "A MONTFORTIAN GIANT"

I wish to invite you to the school anytime today or tomorrow to view the exhibits and sign the condolence book. Can you mass mail out to all former Montfortians who may want to sign the condolence book? We intend to send the book to his family through the Bros of St Gabriel.

THE BOXER

I chronicled what happened in the school. So, the article and some information on him can be found at www.montfortschool.blogspot.com

Tor Cher, Edmund and I did the morning eulogy, which lasted for about half an hour.

We held a farewell concert in the hall on the day itself. The band performed and Mr Simen and myself played "The Boxer" and "Listen to the Falling Rain" to signify the heavens crying.

Very meaningful stuff we did. The boys learnt some meaningful history and heritage that day. You could smell it in the air and sense it through their expressions.

Dear Sir/Madam

The St. Gabriel’s Foundation Charity Golf
(In Aid of the St. Gabriel’s Foundation Endowment Fund)

In the year 1916, the first school in Singapore under the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Gabriel was established. With great missionary zeal and vision, the Brothers went on to establish a number of other Gabrielite schools and educational institutions imparting quality and well rounded education to the children of Singapore. Quote from the National Archives: “They had a whole tradition behind them. They had good results and they had a good reputation. They catered for the rural people who were much simpler?.?/span>

In 2001, the St. Gabriel’s Foundation was established to own and manage the schools and institutions that were formerly under the Brothers. The beneficiaries of the Foundation are:

Assumption English School
Assumption Vocational Institute
Boys?Town Home
Montfort Junior School
Montfort Secondary School
Montfort Centre
St. Gabriel’s Primary School
St. Gabriel’s Secondary School

The Foundation has embarked on a fund raising project to set up an Endowment Fund. The income proceeds of the Fund will be used to provide assistance to needy students of the Gabrielite schools by way of tuck-shop pocket money and professional counseling. Please open your hearts to the less fortunate children whose wants are few and simple but whose needs are great. The plight and difficulties of such children from low –income families deserve our special assistance and support.

As part of the fund-raising efforts, the Foundation is also organizing a charity golf tournament to be played at the Raffles Country Club, Lake Course on 31st March 2006.  Mr. Lim Boon Heng, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office has kindly consented to be the Patron and Guest-of-Honor of this event. We hope you will give us your full-hearted and generous support by taking part in the tournament and contributing to a good cause.

Every gift, large or small will be most appreciated, and will go a long way to help our efforts to alleviate the hardships of those in need.

The St. Gabriel’s Foundation is an approved charitable institution of public character and donations to the Foundation are tax deductible.

Thank You for Your Kind Generosity.

Yours sincerely,

December 2005 - Mountain Bike Trail

The Montfort Alumni (MA) is initiating a cycling special interest group, an idea mooted by Tan Teng Wee (Class of 1973). We are planning to flag off the first bike trail on 17 Dec 2005, in Bukit Timah, probably last remaining nature reserve and park. FUND RAISING UPDATE 2005
"Tsunami: The Students' Perspective." Booklet

Some pages extracted from the 80-page booklet

When school reopened on 3 Jan 2005, the plans to reach out to the Tsunami victims were already in full flight. In addition to raising cash donations, the teachers and students in Montfort Secondary felt that the need to do more. For a school that value "Compassion" and "Discernment" in our mission and vision statements, it is in keeping with our character that we respond differently.

It was unanimously felt by teachers that students should be given an opportunity to pen down their responses to the tsunami disaster as this would give our students an opportunity to express themselves. As Principal was constantly speaking with them about the disaster and the implications and follow up but the students too had many things to say about the disaster, they too had feelings and emotions to share. This idea blossomed into a publication of a book, "Tsunami: The Students' Perspective." By providing an avenue for all our students to express themselves, it not only brings about closure for the students but more importantly, the invaluable lessons one can learn from a disaster of such magnitude.

The team of teachers led by the key personnel of the school quickly conceptualized the format and liaised with publishers, sponsors, teachers and students to get it off the ground. The teachers and students were being carried by the wave of compassion that followed the tsunami.

The book thematically arranged according to the stages of grief: Denial and Anger, Bargaining and Depression, Acceptance and Encouragement should be out by the end of January. It comprises articles, poems, reflections and drawings to give the students an opportunity to express themselves in the genre that they are most comfortable with. These pieces are also written in English, Chinese, Malay or Tamil to emphasize our sense of unity in this moment of grief. Anyone reading this book will at once gain an insight into how our young feel and respond to such calamities. More importantly we will be encouraged that they are growing up to be fine young people. If there is some encouragement that one can take from this disaster, it is that we are raising a generation of young people that we can be confident will continue do us proud. They can respond in the right way and will continue to do so.

The book was launched by Mr. Charles Chong, Member of Parliament for Pasir-Ris Punggol GRC during the school's Chinese New Year Celebrations. 5000 copies of the book will be on sale at $6 per copy as a fund-raising project and all proceeds will go to the victims through Tsunami Relief Fund. In all, the school hopes to raise about $30,000. This effort will always provide us with the memory of our grief and the unity of spirit that our young Montfortians share with their fellow human beings.

Refer to MA News Flash for details of ordering the booklet.

GOLF UPDATE 2005

Thai CGA Golf Invitation January 2005

Thai CGA 2005 Invitation
A total of about 55 Montfortians, Gabrielites and wives traveled to Bangkok in January 2005 on the invitation of CGA Thailand.

33 golfers teed-off at Green Valley Golf and Country Club for a practice round followed by the tournament proper the following day at Maung Kaew Golf and Country Club with our Thai counterpart (ABACA - Assumption Business Administration College Alumni). Non-golfers including wives did a tour of Bangkok plus shopping under the "spiritual" guidance of Bro Emmanuel.

Their tour included visit to the Assumption University at Bang-Na where one can admire the majestic architecture of the building and facilities, which Bro Martin personally supervised.

Our group also travelled up north to Nakonratchasima to visit Assumption College Nakonratchasima and join them for their anniversary celebration Funfare and Dinner.

In this town, golfers had the opportunity to tee-off at two courses, namely, Voyage Panorama Golf course and Bonaza Koa Yai Golf and Country Resort.

Non-golfers visited St Gabriel School that has a collection of bugs, butterflies and beetles in their own museum.

On our return back to Bangkok, several of the appointment holders were invited to the ABAC Trojan Nite held at Queen Sirikit Convention Hall to join the graduates' celebration.

Singapore CGA Golf Outing for 2005
In Singapore, we will endeavour to continue The CGA Golf outing on monthly basis when time permits.

MA Golf 2005 Event
The Big Event this year would be the Montfort Alumni Golf Event, planned for October. This is a non-fund raising event but to bring back as much alumni as possible.

"I'll never do it again without Great Golf Events ." - John Abrahams

Volunteers needed to form the organizing committee. Please come forward, help and organize. See the MA Archives for some pictures of previous golf events.

Naturally we are looking for help to get sponsors to make the event a greater success.

Anyone can get a sponsor for the next Hole-In-One car prize as well?

BADMINTON UPDATE 2005

Montfort Alumni Badminton Group (MABG) started in May 2004 with 6 Montfortians at the Montfort Junior School Hall, made available through the kind generosity of the Principal, Ms Judina Chua.

Presently on record, we have about 30 players, age ranging from 20s to 60s, and on average we have about 12 to 15 regulars playing weekly on Wednesday nights, from 7.00pm to 10.00pm.

As there are 3 courts available, we welcome more shuttlers to join in the sweat it out. We oldies run out of steam too fast. The ideal would be would be around 20 players.

As many Montfortians do not play golf, the Badminton weekly serves other members an opportunity to meet, network and sweat out those extra kilos. We are still in our infancy, and we are not ready to have any competition yet. But it will happen soon enough. Now it is the "Battle of our Bulges".

It is well known that Montfort had won many trophies at the national level. We even had an old boy, Chia Yong Joo who represented Singapore in international games.

There are plans to reach out to more members and develop the MABG further with the help of Yong Joo. We will keep you posted.

Join us every Wednesday night. You can also check out who are the badminton enthusiasts in the Member Search feature. See you.

GOLF REPORT FOR 2004

The Montfort Monthly Golf
1st March 2002 saw the beginning of "Montfort Monthly Golf Friendly" event where champions and runners-up emerged on two formats of "Best Honest John" and "Best Nett Stroke Play". The monthly games generated lots of interest from the old boys who looked forward to every game making it a regular affair for the die-hards on the green.

Kudos to the golfers from class of 1970 who started this social game amongst them, and kick-started it to an official MA Monthly Golf friendly, introducing winner trophies through the initiative of John Tan.

Ties were rekindled amongst Montfortians and the golfing group thrives on continuing till today. Besides the monthly meet, there were also golf charity events, which the group generously supported. See the MA Archives for articles and pictures.

Thai CGA 2004 Invitation
Additionally, in the year 2004 a contingent of about 25 Montfortians travelled to Bangkok for a golf event organized by the CGA of Thailand.

This trip included sightseeing tours for non-golfers and wives whilst we played at Lakewood Golf and Country Club / Suprapuek Golf and Country Club. A few also attended final day of The Johnny Walker Classic tournament at The Alpine Golf and Country Club accompanied by Gordon Lim, Gabrielite and our "Johnnie" sponsor.

Singapore CGA Golf Formation
News of the Montfort Golf Monthly spread rapidly here by word of mouth, and from the Thailand trip to golfers to schools under the umbrella of The Bros of St Gabriel's. Soon they, too, joined in making it a bigger family affair.

From February 2004, this regular outing has been re-named CGA (Confederation of Gabrielites Alumni) Singapore Golf Outing to include golfers from St Gabriel's, Boys' Town and Assumption schools.

Sponsors & Thanks
Additionally, in the year 2004 a contingent of about 25 Montfortians travelled to Bangkok for a golf event organized by the CGA of Thailand.

Lastly, this event would not be successful without the full cooperation, patience, and understanding from the golfers on any shortcomings and all members of the various golf clubs who assisted in playing hosts. A round of applause to all of you.

ST GABRIELS'S FOUNDATION LAUNCH DINNER - 2004 OCTOBER

The official launch of the St Gabriel's Foundation was celebrated with a highly successful dinner on 30th October 2004. Held at the St. Gabriel's Secondary School Hall, the dinner was graced by an old boy of Montfort, His Grace, Most Rev Mgr Nicholas Chia who was the Guest of Honour.

Despite the very short notice to organize the dinner, the Organizing Committee made up of the Principals of the Gabrielite Schools pulled it off successfully. The dinner was a sell-out, attended by more than 700 old boys and supporters. Amongst the VIPs were Mr. Lim Boon Heng, Minister, Prime Minister's Office, Mr. Ng Kok Song, Managing Director, GIC, Mr. Michael Tan, previously Senior EVP Singapore Airlines, Khun Wanlop Chiaravanont, President, Confederation of The Gabrielites Alumni, [CGA] Thailand. CGA Thailand sent a contingent of 4 Senior Officials to grace the occasion.

Apart from the good spread, merry making and catching up of old times, each school put up a special item which had the audience rapt in attention. The Dinner also raised some $20,000 for the Foundation.

Everyone had a great time, and people were still milling around long after the party was over.

MONTFORT WALKATHON 2004 JULY

The Guest-Of-Honour, BG (NS) George Yeo flagged off the Montfort Walkathon 2004 on 23rd July 2004, 8 a.m., with the theme "The Sporting Montfortian". The combined Montfort Junior and Montfort Secondary event was organized to raise funds through donation cards. The presence of well-known sportsman, James Wong, added a touch of celebrity to the event and he was an excellent role model for the young Montfortians who harbour similar aspirations to excel in sports.

The MA also participated in the fund raising event and many members turned up all geared up and added to the fun by joining in the walkathon. The event turned out to be a grand success and the schools managed to raise close to $45,000 together. The funds will go towards the PRIME and school development programme.

We thank everyone who joined in the morning walk and all those who contributed to making this event a success!
