Dear Sir/Madam Fund Raising in Aid of The St. Gabriel’s Foundation Endowment FundIn the year 1916, the first school in Singapore under the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Gabriel was established. With great missionary zeal and vision, the Brothers went on to establish a number of other Gabrielite schools and educational institutions imparting quality and well rounded education to the children of Singapore. Quote from the National Archives: “They had a whole tradition behind them. They had good results and they had a good reputation. They catered for the rural people who were much simpler…..” In 2001, the St. Gabriel’s Foundation was established to own and manage the schools and institutions that were formerly under the Brothers. The beneficiaries of the Foundation are:
Assumption English School The Foundation has embarked on a fund raising project to set up an Endowment Fund. The income proceeds of the Fund will be used to provide assistance to needy students of the Gabrielite schools by way of tuck-shop pocket money and professional counseling. Please open your hearts to the less fortunate children whose wants are few and simple but whose needs are great. The plight and difficulties of such children from low –income families deserve our special assistance and support. We hope you will give us your full-hearted and generous support by contributing to a good cause. Every gift, large or small will be most appreciated, and will go a long way to help our efforts to alleviate the hardships of those in need. The St. Gabriel’s Foundation is an approved charitable institution of public character and donations to the Foundation are tax deductible. Thank You for Your Kind Generosity.
Yours sincerely, |
St Gabriel's Foundation
The religious congregation of the Brothers of St Gabriel arrived in Singapore in 1936. Since their arrival, many schools and institutions of learning have been established under the auspices of the Brothers of St Gabriel. The schools include Assumption English School, Assumption Vocational Institute, Montfort Junior School, Montfort Secondary School, St Gabriel's Primary School, St Gabriel's Secondary School and Boys' Town Home. True to the Brothers' mission of educating the poor, thousands who have passed through the gates of these mission schools have benefited from the Gabrielite brand of education. All these would not have been possible, had the Brothers of St Gabriel not set foot on Singapore.
The arrival of the late Brother Adolphus, Brother John de Breboeuf and Brother Gerard Majella marked the historical beginnings of the schools that were set up by the Brothers of St Gabriel. Instead of waiting for the then colonial authorities to see to the education of the people, the religious Brothers took it upon themselves to set up schools to provide education for the poor and underprivileged children, who in those days, lacked access to education.
Over the years, many of the older Brothers have since passed on and it is also unfortunate that the numbers of vocations to the Brothers of St Gabriel have dwindled. To continue the mission of education and to administer and managed the schools set up by the Gabrielite Brothers, Mr. Lim Boon Heng, an old boy of Montfort and currently Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, mooted the idea of setting up a Foundation. This found support from the Titular Superior and others. Consequently the St Gabriel's Foundation was established. The Foundation is managed by a Board of Governors made up of religious Brothers and prominent lay people.
The objectives of the St Gabriel's Foundation are to provide continuity to the Gabrielite mission; providing education and assisting its pupils to grow up as morally upright citizens, to help its pupils who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress. In doing so, the Foundation seeks to carry on the good work of the Brothers of St Gabriel.
The Foundation will be setting up a common School Pocket Money Fund for the schools under its charge. This is the first time that a pocket money fund has been specially set up to look after the needy students of the Gabrielite Schools. In addition, the Foundation will also introduce a Counselling Program to help the social and emotional well-being of the students.
